Poem book 2: Idols of our Time

Poem: The Idols of our Times

When I look to God, I see only the idols jumping in front of His throne,

this is how my mind works, I try to look at God, and sports jump in front of my thoughts towards Him…

We live in such a distracted world, I am a fan of basketball, but funny enough it is not watching the game of basketball that sucks up my time, it is the dialogue around basketball, it is the daily podcasts, the daily YouTube videos about the game itself, the players.

This is idolatry, we look up to these figures, we look to these figures to entertain us.

“Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.” 1 Corinthians 10:14

I hate idolatry, I hate how much time I have wasted in my life to worship the idols of sports, sex, entertainment, TV, pleasure, etc.

We, humans, the modern humans of today, have been given a world full of emptiness.

Just as Solomon sought the pleasures of his time, I feel I have gone through most of the pleasures of my day;

Sex, Porn, TV, video games, hookup culture, college parties, working out, bodybuilding, fighting, social media.

Even more Sophiticated pleasures like:

Entrepreneurship, philosophical studies, self-help books, classical educations, personal development, and so-called spiritual developmental teachings.

Whatever it is that has promised a life of fulfillment I have looked into it,

“I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 2:1

“Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:11

We have modern idols for young men today: I see Joe Rogan, Jocko, Goggins, Tim Ferriss, Alex Hormozi…

These are men that we have lifted up as gods, like a pharaoh in Egypt, we have created these men to be gods over our lives, idolizing them into our own slave masters.

“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” Romans 1:25

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry” Colossians 3:5

I have sought after many different religions and many different philosophies,

all have been fleeting, like the chasing of wind,

I did NOT find; lasting… ever-sustaining… perfected self… unending success

In any of them,

There may have been short moments of pleasure

Feelings of success, short bursts of inflated ego

but nothing LASTED in any of these pursuits,

they could not sustain me. My soul was still empty.
